Most notably, Jeff was president and CEO of Lotus Development Corporation (IBM) where he is widely credited for making Lotus Notes an industry standard and growing its customer base to more than 80 million users. Following IBM’s $3.5B acquisition of Lotus, which was the largest in the technology industry’s history at that time, Jeff stayed on as Lotus’ President and CEO for seven years, ensuring the company’s success. Before Lotus, Jeff was the President and CEO of Cognos, Inc. (NASDAQ: COGN) the leader in business intelligence (BI) and performance management (PM) software. Jeff led the company to sustained profitability, an initial public offering and continued growth that met or exceeded market and Wall Street expectations. He also held senior management positions with several software companies that were recognized as innovative category leaders in the nascent and burgeoning independent software industry, including Software International and Cullinet Software, which was acquired by CA Technologies.
In addition to deftly managing large organizations Jeff has shown he is equally adept at shepherding early stage companies from their launch, through liquidity events and successful exits. Jeff was President and CEO of Maptuit, a provider of real-time commercial navigation software. Having led Maptuit from the outset to profitability and a market leadership position, Papows continued to play an active role in the company as Chairman of the Board through its acquisition in 2012 by Telogis. Jeff was also President and CEO of Weblayers Inc., a leader in Automated Design Time Software Governance. Under Jeff’s leadership, the company quadrupled in size and became cash flow positive.
Today Jeff is the CEO of ShopAdvisor, Inc., an innovative provider of mobile proximity marketing technology, which is used by restaurants, CPG brands, retailers and digital agencies to power mobile marketing campaigns. Jeff took over leadership of the company in the Fall of 2015 to turn around the company’s fortunes. Jeff quickly positioned the company away from its focus on the traditional retail advertising market, which was in decline, to the growing CPG, QSR and Fast Casual restaurant segments. To accelerate this transition, he brought in new investors and made a strategic acquisition of Redwood City, CA-based Retailigence Corporation in a stock swap transaction. This move and the subsequent integration of Retailigence into ShopAdvisor was met with industry acclaim, calling ShopAdvisor a player in mobile proximity marketing. Today the company is breaking new ground in helping QSR and Fast Casual restaurant owner/operators increase brand awareness and sales to consumers through contextually intelligent mobile marketing campaigns.
